Year 5

Welcome to Year Five

There are 30 children in Year Five and you will find them in the junior building at the front of the school. The children share the building with Years Three, Four and Six as well as the library, hall and offices.

In Year Five, the theme based Imaginative Learning Projects are very exciting. We learn about exciting events in history, such as the Titanic and the Black Death and investigate the fascinating lives of the Tudors. These projects are supported by local trips to museums as well as to Hampton Court Palace.

Year Five are very lucky to be a part of a local gardening project in which the children walk to Ham House each month and tend the school's allotment, learning all about plants and how to grow their own food.

Year Five are also lucky enough to have students from The German School visit each week to teach the children how to speak German. This is usually done through song and various games to engage their memory.

The most anticipated trip of the year is without doubt the Year Five residential to Sayers Croft in November, where the children will be climbing walls, building shelters and using a compass to find their way out of the woods. But, most importantly, learning how to properly make a bed and repack a suitcase!

Our Imaginative Learning Projects:

From the moment we are born, from toddler to teen, middle age to elderly, time stops for no man. Find out what happens to our bodies and brains as we age and how we cope with these changes. How long does a human baby take to grow inside the womb? Does it take longer than an elephant calf…?

Journey through space, the final frontier… Navigate beyond the Sun, the magnificent, blazing star at the centre of our solar system!Investigate the eight planets, the moon and the stars. Then it’s three, two, one… BLAST OFF! Build and launch a rocket for an important test mission.

Let’s travel back 5000 years to the dusty realms of ancient Egypt. Cruise along the Nile, entering a world of mysteries and curses, mummies and kings. Find out about life on the river’s fertile banks, discovering Egypt and its fascinating culture. Unravel the secrets of ancient tombs, using historical sources and age old artefacts.

Flee your fields, close your doors and pull up the drawbridge: the dreaded and deathly ‘Great Pestilence’ is here! Mount your steed and gallop through the dark and deadly world of 14th century Britain, sword and shield at the ready, pledging your allegiance to king and country.

What sort of man would order the beheading of his wife? Travel back in time to the 1500s and meet the terrifying Tudors, a domineering dynasty that changed history. Discover a court where dancing and singing go hand in hand with swift falls from favour – and even swifter falling of heads!

Roll up, roll up! Learn about the science behind roller coasters and write poems like loop the loops. Design your own theme park and show your ideas in a digital map. Time for some investigations – cam mechanisms, pendulums, pulleys and prototypes. Let’s go behind the scenes and see forces at work.
