We welcome thirty children into Reception each year and help them to settle quickly into life at The Russell School. 

We are really lucky in Reception because we have many exciting areas to work and play in within our classroom and the outside areas which we share with the Nursery. We always have lots of challenging activities that we can choose from, whether it is being dramatic on our outside stage or painting a fabulous picture or playing with numbers in strawberry jelly!

We are also lucky to have lots of people to help us learn. We have our teacher and our teaching assistant, as well as other adults who work with us during the week.

To support our parents and promote partnership in learning, the school runs a series of workshops covering topics such as reading and number. Parents are invited and welcome to attend one or all of the sessions in order to best support their child's learning.

In Reception we lay the foundations for all children's learning as they progress through the school. We aim to build their interests and desire to explore and find out about the world around them, as well as develop an inquisitive 'can do' attitude. We develop independence, social and communication skills as well as instilling a fair and compassionate nature. We begin the fundamentals in reading, writing and maths but, most of all, we strive to grow a happy child.
