Year One is where the National Curriculum begins. It is the start of Key Stage One.
In Year One we continue the great progress that your child will have made in the Early Years. We hope to further develop your child’s independence, confidence and communication skills alongside the Year One curriculum. The children work in small groups with teachers and teaching assistants and many activities are project based. The children love to explore new themes each half term. We cover all aspects of the curriculum through these Imaginative Learning Projects.
The Year One timetable is jam-packed with new experiences and activities to build on the children's knowledge. We provide many opportunities for practical learning through exploration and investigation both inside and outside of the classroom. The children have access to a range of toys, games and equipment to compliment their learning and aid their skills in sharing and communication.
In Year One we develop the children's understanding of letters and sounds through daily practise to encourage independent reading and writing. The children also begin to learn how to join their letters in a cursive style.
We find children love being in Year One, especially when they find an alien space craft has crash landed in our school or they are preparing for a visit from The Queen!
