    The Russell School

In an ever changing world of technology, we aim to help our children to become knowledgeable about the nature of information, gain confidence with the range of technology available and have the ability to exploit its potential.

At The Russell School, we provide our children with a high-quality computing education as part of our cross-curricular and innovative approach to learning. Technology plays a significant role in our ever-changing world and a pivotal part in young people’s lives. Many career opportunities rely on our children having substantial digital skills; we develop those skills through a variety of creative, challenging and practical opportunities.

Our children become independent, competent and responsible users of technology; this is achieved by enhancing their skills through different types of media, whilst always sustaining an awareness of online safety. At the heart of computing is computer science. Through this, we equip our children to use computational thinking and language to solve problems, whilst also developing critical thinking skills and building resilience.

Our computing curriculum, both online and unplugged, is embedded within our Imaginative Learning Projects to ensure that learning is creative and accessible to all.

On leaving The Russell School, our children are skilled in all areas of computing: computer science, digital literacy and information technology, ensuring that they have a solid foundation to progress to the next stage of their educational lives and beyond.

At The Russell School, all children have the opportunity to

  • understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • analyse problems in computational terms and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

Our computing units are based on a spiral curriculum. This means that each of the themes is revisited regularly (at least once in each year group) and children revisit each theme through a new unit that consolidates and builds on prior learning within that theme. This ensures that knowledge is built upon, not lost, and that connections are made in consecutive years. Units covered in every year group from Year One to Year Six include Computing Systems and Networks, Creating Media, Data and Information, and Programming.
