    The Russell School

At The Russell School, we are committed to providing our children with an exciting and positive learning environment in which they are offered opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of religions, supporting their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Religious education promotes inclusivity, respect and open-mindedness towards others of different faiths and beliefs and encourages our children to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. At The Russell School, we encourage our children to learn in an innovative, enquiry-based approach, where they develop an understanding of and appreciation for the expression of beliefs, cultural practices and influence of principle religions and world views in our local, national and wider global community.

The religious education curriculum at The Russell School is organised to

  • support the development of children’s knowledge of religious and non-religious beliefs and world views, practices and ways of life
  • enable children to make links between these
  • develop children’s understanding of the different members of our rich and diverse community
  • be supported by first-hand experiences, including visits to local places of worship

Our children are encouraged to reflect on their beliefs and thoughts, as well as to participate in discussion through thought-provoking questions. This approach promotes understanding and cohesion of the points of view of others, explores various aspects of our lives, develops respect for the difference in our beliefs and provides opportunities to reflect on the similarities.

Our religious education curriculum is also designed to support positive attitudes and is anchored in our strong system of school values. It demonstrates the school’s commitment to ensuring mutual respect and tolerance for those of different faiths. It also encourages our children to reflect and relate learning to their own experiences, to learn that there are those who do not hold religious beliefs and to understand those who have their own philosophical perspectives.
