    The Russell School

The Russell School incorporates the Science National Curriculum into our own creative curriculum. We encourage our children to be naturally inquisitive about the world around them.

At The Russell School, we believe that science helps to provoke children’s natural interest and curiosity in the world around them. Our children are encouraged to explore and investigate through rich and varied opportunities so that they can develop a greater understanding about the world in which they live and, through studying scientists and inventors, they can understand that science has changed our lives and is crucial to the world’s future prosperity. We aim to foster a sense of awe and wonder in our children; we want them to become naturally inquisitive scientists and to develop the necessary scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding in order to be successful.

We want our children to develop their understanding of processes, methods and different types of enquiry so that they know that a scientist uses their scientific skills and knowledge to

● ask questions

● make observations

● experiment and classify

● apply their observations and ideas

● record their findings

Our stimulating, engaging and challenging science curriculum is underpinned by The National Curriculum, our Imaginative Learning Projects and our strong system of school values. It supports a cohesive structure for inclusive learning, enabling our children to develop their specialist scientific vocabulary so that they can use technical terminology with understanding and accuracy. It allows us to use discussion as a tool to probe children’s understanding and to clarify any misconceptions. It ensures that, in our children, we cultivate a life-long fascination about the world, promote their interest and understanding of diverse animals, plants, materials, physical phenomena and natural and human environments and help them to see themselves as our scientists of the future.
