    The Russell School

We believe that the fitness of the children and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle is of utmost importance at The Russell School. We have been awarded The GOLD Primary Sports Award of which we are very proud. It recognises our excellence in the teaching and learning of sport.

At The Russell School, we strive to create an environment which will inspire an active generation to enjoy physical activity, encourage each other and feel a sense of achievement. We promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle and provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities. This is essential in supporting their physical, emotional and social development - maintaining a healthy body and a healthy mind. We offer varied and stimulating lessons and daily excercise to ensure that all children progress physically through a fully inclusive and innovative physical education curriculum.

At The Russell School, we encourage all children to develop their understanding of how they can use their body, equipment and apparatus safely yet imaginatively, achieve their personal goals and improve their performance. All children have the opportunity to enjoy being physically active every day, to maintain a healthy and mindful lifestyle and, with this, increase their self-esteem.

We aspire for children to adopt a positive mind-set and to believe that anything can be achieved with determination, courage and resilience. Our children are taught to appreciate and practise the conventions of fair play, honest and healthy competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators. Children develop the necessary knowledge and skills that will have a positive impact on their future, allowing them to become physically active citizens, in turn benefiting their long-term health and well-being.

We are fortunate enough to have extensive grounds which include two playgrounds, a large field and a hall with a fully sprung floor. All children take part in a varied physical education programme. The importance of progression, the gaining of self-confidence, control and co-ordination are our main priorities. In Key Stage Two all children visit Pools on the Park in Richmond. Swimming lessons continue throughout the year for all children.

Some children are given the opportunity to represent the school against other local Richmond schools in competitive events such as swimming, girls’ and boys’ football and netball.

All children have access to a wide variety of equipment to use at morning and lunch play which supports their physical development.

We also offer a wide variety of lunchtime, before and after school sports clubs that include gymnastics, athletics, dodgeball, hockey, netball and football.
